Heroin’s Kiss" by Laura Cain (2018) Artist statement: “Heroin’s Kiss” depicts the devastating hold drugs can have over a person, leaving them prisoner to the substance. So often, in society, drugs are glorified as a means to escape the pressures of life. The flowers and soft color palette demonstrate this captivating lure of heroin and this idea of escaping. The woman is nude to show that she has completely stripped herself of all humanity and surrendered herself to the drug. However, the flowers are merely a disguise. The skull reveals the true intentions of the drug, alluding to inevitable death and destruction.
